any company, brand, personality requires a website. you've got your logo, your brand organized - now what?
(if you haven't got a logo or brand developed then you should start here.)
so it's time to build your website. just as you have to plan how to build a house, where to put your rooms, your budget and what you want it to look like you should make some plans about your website.
that's why we've put together a list of questions that you should consider and discuss with your web developer before starting your building project.
target audience
how large is your target audience? how old is your target audience in general? what type of people are they? what does your competition's websites look like? write down some of your competitions' sites. which ones are good and which ones are bad and why? how much traffic do you estimate will come to your site? what do you want your site to achieve?
domain name
this is the address that visitors will type into their browser bar to reach your site. are you going to use your brand in australia only or are you thinking about expanding overseas? you should discuss your domain name with your developer thoroughly since you might require more than one name and country extension and your domain name has strong usability and google rating implications.
type of website
what is your website supposed to do? are you just going to have contact details and a short overview of your services on your site or do you want to sell goods online? if you do want to sell goods online what functionalities do you require? are you going to cross promote products, mass upload large product catalogues and update your customers with specials or are you simply selling two small items? are you planning on using social sites to promote your business?
design
who will design your site? there's a big difference between design and development. are you comfortable with a programmer designing your site or would you rather have a designer design your site? are you ok with using a template for your website? will the design reflect your branding? do you have imagery that you would like to use? have you got your logos in eps format and know what your company colours are?
time line
how quickly do you require your site? different sites require varying time to develop. an ecommerce store in general takes a lot longer than any other type of web site. that's not only to develop but also to learn how to use your online store. find out what your developer can do while your site is being built.
once the site is built
how are you planning to drive traffic to your site? have you got a marketing budget set? are you going to cross promote your site offline? who is going to maintain your site? who is providing the traingin? are you updating content yourself? how are you going to collect leads, grow your database? how are you going to communicate with your audience? are you aware of how to be spam compliant? who is going to maintain your store?
